Cosmetic Surgery Blog: All About Getting a Tummy Tuck!
January 25th, 2011  Posted By George Pope MD   Posted in Tummy Tuck | No Comments »

Who wants sagging skin and loose hanging fats in the tummy? I bet no one does. Every man or woman would want to look sexy and have that flat, sexy, well-toned abdomen and even perhaps six packs. Many of us strive hard to get those desirable tummies through exercise and diet but at times these methods simply cannot successfully accomplish our goals.

A “tummy tuck” or abdominoplasty is a procedure that makes the abdomen firmer. In order for the muscles and the fascia to tighten, tummy tuck involves the extraction of excess skin and fats from the middle and the lower abdomen. For patients with loose, sagging tissues after pregnancy or major weight loss, tummy tuck is the cosmetic surgery usually sought after by these clients.

Even clients with normal body weight and proportion have chances of developing an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. This may be due to pregnancy, aging, significant changes in weight, heredity or prior surgeries. Tummy tuck is a good option especially for persons who are physically healthy, have a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle.

Tummy tuck surgeries offer many aesthetic benefits such as removal of excess skin and tightening of abdominal muscles, and minimize if not totally eliminate stretch marks. Unlike abdominal liposuction, tummy tuck allows for excess skin extraction to augment the removal of stubborn pockets of fat. With a tummy tuck, the surgeon does not only reduce a protuberant belly, but the surgeon can make it appear as if the belly was not protruding in the first place.

Tummy tucks can also be combined with other cosmetic surgeries such as abdominal liposuction, breast augmentation and the like. Results of tummy tuck are usually permanent but factors must be considered such as future plans of losing weight or getting pregnant because these can affect or perhaps diminish the positive outcome of the surgery. Full recovery from tummy tucks usually take about 3-6 months, with further fading of scars thereafter. Nicotine use is prohibited at about a month or longer both before and after a tummy tuck and heavy activity is also discouraged.

Like any surgeries whatever its nature or purpose, there are still risk involved and should not be taken lightly. Although serious complications are rare with tummy tucks, still this is a major surgery and all factors should be considered.

Possible complications from tummy tuck surgeries include anesthesia reactions, bleeding, blood clots, delayed wound healing, infection or unfavorable drug reactions. It is then very important to follow preoperative and postoperative instructions in order to reduce the chances of encountering complications after the tummy tuck surgery. Before making any decision, it is always best to compare the benefits with the potential risks and complications. Another thing about tummy tuck surgery is that this does not require hospitalization postoperatively.

Tummy tucks cost variably from one country to another. Like most cosmetic surgeries such as breast augmentation and abdominal liposuction, the cost depends on several factors like the patient’s age, their weight and state of health. There may also be additional costs depending on the individual if he/she would decide to have a mixed tummy tuck.

Tummy tuck surgery is a procedure that is highly individualized and one should do it for oneself, and not for other people or for trying to fit oneself to a certain image as imposed by other persons. A tummy tuck is a choice you have to make for yourself.

Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Botox Facts 101
January 21st, 2011  Posted By George Pope MD   Posted in Botox, Fillers | No Comments »

Our youth is something that we value the most, but as we age, we slowly lose what we have. Through time, our skin tends to wrinkle or sag and our muscles become stiff and inflexible. These are problems associated with aging, and factors like: stress, occupation and genetics contribute to the problems. However, with modern technology and the growing concern over the maintenance of one’s health and youthfulness, there is a procedure that greatly remedies the problems caused by aging, and that is BOTOX injection.

BOTOX or onabotulinumtoxin A is injected into the skin to improve wrinkles and frown-lines and it can also be injected into the muscles to relieve stiffness and inflexibility.

Botox is used for the following reasons:

  • To smoothen wrinkles of the face
  • To make frown-lines disappear
  • To relieve muscles stiffness at the fingers, wrists and elbows
  • To alleviate neck pain and abnormality of head position caused by Cervical Dystonia
  • To cure problems of the eye muscles like: blepharospasm or eye lid spasm and strabismus or cross-eyed.
  • To keep individuals with migraine from having severe headaches that lasts 4 hours a day at about 15 or more times in a month
  • To help treat severe underarm sweating or sever primary axillary hyperhidrosis for those who have used topical agents but proved to be ineffective

Upon consultation with us, we will perform a general assessment. We will take your medical history, and it is imperative that you enumerate all your allergies in food, medicine and others. Botox injection is not advisable if you have skin allergies at the site to be injected and if you have allergic reactions to other botulinum products like: Myobloc®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®. We must have a list of all the medication and vitamins that you take.

Risks for side effects are greater when you have muscle or nerve problems like: Myasthenia Gravis, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Lambert-Eaton syndrome. Serious side effects include difficulty breathing and difficulty swallowing.

Before the procedure it is also important to inform us if you are pregnant or have plans to be pregnant, if you are breastfeeding or have plans to breastfeed and if you have had facial surgery or have plans to have surgery.  Equally important, we need to know if your other problems like: abnormal facial change, raising your eyebrow, drooping eyelids and weakness on the muscles of the forehead.

The procedure is really quite simple. The doctor assesses the site to be injected, then he calculates the precise amount to be injected. After which he will clean the site of injection and start infusing the Botox slowly and cautiously.

After the procedure you can expect great results from the injection. Changes can be noticeable in a few days and you can resume your normal activities. It is important to note that whatever side effects you experience you must immediately call us or seek emergency medical attention. Examples of these side effects are:

  • Muscles weakness leading to difficulty breathing, swallowing and speaking
  • There is also the tendency of the toxin to spread away from the injection site and causing general muscle weakness, strength loss, difficulty speaking words clearly, hoarseness, change or loss of voice, drooping of eyelids, double vision blurred vision and loss of bladder control.
  • Other side effects include: headache, neck pain, dry eyes, swelling of eyelids, decreased eyesight, fatigue, dry mouth and discomfort at injection site.

When use of BOTOX or BOTOX cosmetic causes some muscle weakness, you should refrain from operating machinery driving and other activities that require exertion.

If it is your desire to reduce wrinkles and frown-lines on your face, other procedures may be considered. since BOTOX treatment for these problems are temporary, you can opt for procedures that last longer like: face lift, eyelid lift, brow lift, and you could also consider nose lift.

If you are looking for the safest and most effective BOTOX procedure, then the Orlando Plastic Surgery Center is your best option. They specialize in procedures like BOTOX. Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Is a Collagen Filler for you?
January 18th, 2011  Posted By George Pope MD   Posted in Collagen, Cosmetic Procedures, Fillers | No Comments »

Our skin is one often times one of our assets when it comes to beauty. A healthy skin always amounts to a younger-looking appearance. In young individuals, the skin is more elastic and resilient, thanks to a strong framework of proteins called collagen.

The collagen is responsible for keeping the skin intact and moisturized making it elastic. In older individuals, the skin tends to weaken with age and thus losing its elasticity. When this happens together with the effect of your facial expressions, the skin will sag, develop wrinkles and frown-lines will appear. If you ask, can moisturizers help? Yes it helps in a way by slowing down the rate of water loss from the skin. Water loss means less skin moisture thus contributing to the skin’s dry appearance. Know that moisturizers act only on the outside; it never goes inside to nourish the collagen. Wondering what would be the best way to solve this problem? It is through Collagen injection. Since moisturizers cannot undo the damage done onto the natural collagen of the skin, a Collagen injection is the best option. The injections revitalize the natural collagen of the skin thereby strengthening the structure and regaining the skin’s elasticity.

You must first consult us before having the procedure. You should discuss what your expected outcomes of the procedure are. With the consultation you can also know how many injections you will need since one injection will not suffice to rid all the frown-lines on your face. We will take your medical history and will discuss which Collagen filler is best for you.

Once it is decided which filler you will use, we will inject a very tiny amount of the filler into the outermost layer of your skin. This is called skin testing to know if you have any allergic reactions to the filler you are going use. You must observe the area for four weeks and inform us of any unusual reactions. Most do not develop reaction, so if you tested negative you can then have the injection.

The procedure is safe and simple. Before injection of collagen, we will first inject some local anesthesia to numb the area. Like most procedures, you should expect to develop slight bruising, tenderness, redness and puffiness on the injection site.
There are various collagen fillers that may be used depending on your case.

Fat from your thighs or abdomen may also be taken and used for injection. It is for permanent results and has no risk for reactions. This can also be implanted surgically.

Restylane is a popular collagen. It is a clear gel that has hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. It has little chance of causing any reactions. The material is biodegradable, thus it would be reabsorbed into the body in about six months.

At the Orlando Plastic Surgery Center, our patients’ health and beauty needs come first. We specialize in aesthetically enhancing procedures, such as Collagen injections. With more than 20 years of experience in Plastic Surgery your desired results will be achieved. Orlando also offers several other procedures like: face lift, eyelid lift, brow lift, and nose lift. Cosmetic Surgery Blog: All about Chemical Peels for your Face!
January 13th, 2011  Posted By George Pope MD   Posted in Chemical Peels, Skin Care, Skin Rejuvenation, Skin Resurfacing | No Comments »

Chemical peels can improve many different types of skin conditions including scarring from acne, skin pigmentation issues, and uneven skin surface caused by sun and aging. Chemical peels can also help reduce fine wrinkles, brighten up dull or weathered skin, freckling skin, reduce brown spots.

A chemical peel is a great first step to improving your skin without surgical intervention. You can choose from different options depending on your need. Basically, a chemical peel removes the dead skin cells and the damaged outer layers of your skin. A chemical solution smoothens or evens out the outer layer and causes it to peel. A peel helps enhance your overall look because the outer damaged skin layers are removed.

A Mild Peel is one in which only the superficial skin layer is removed. This is the common type of chemical peel and is generally recommended for most skin types. It is most commonly used to treat simple acne and pimple scars or smoothen skin pigmentation problems. The chemical peel is basically a diluted acid solution which is applied on the skin for a few minutes (2-4 minutes). It is neutralized with water after that and the face is wiped clean. A cooling mixture may be applied if there is any discomfort or burning sensation experienced.  This peel results in a smoother and brighter-looking skin almost immediately.

A Medium Peel is one in which the acid or chemical goes beyond the superficial layer of the skin. After the treatment, you may experience a sun-burned look. The skin may also look a bit chafed. In this peel, the chemical solution is kept on the skin longer than in the mild peel. This peel is most recommended for people who have significant sun-damaged skin types, heavy wrinkles, and greater skin pigmentation problems.

A Deep Peel and one that is rarely used goes through several skin layers. It is used to treat pigmentation problems and wrinkles and other issues. A deep skin peel takes longer time, more than an hour in many cases and does produce more dramatic results but also requires far significant recovery time. Deep peels are not recommended in most cases as they can also have severe skin complications.

To get started then, a mild chemical peel is the best option. Call our office today and schedule a free consultation with our medical aesthetician to see if a chemical peel is for you.

Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Breast Lift Surgery 101
January 11th, 2011  Posted By George Pope MD   Posted in Breast Lift | 1 Comment »

Appearance is very important for most women.  Much attention is given to enhance and maintain their appearance. However, due to age and gravity, the breasts tend to lose its youthful qualities. An important part of the woman’s anatomy that greatly suffers as they age is her bust. Because of several factors like: pregnancy, lactation and weight loss, the breasts can lose their firmness and shape. The breasts appear deflated and sagging; this is because of a discrepancy between the volume of breast tissue and the excess of the breast’s skin envelope.

To correct this dissatisfying outcome, a surgical procedure can be done. Breast lift or Mastopexy is designed to delay or reverse the negative effects of age and gravity. The areola that tends to widen during lactation may also be reduced through the procedure. The breast may also be augmented by placing implants to achieve a fuller and firmer appearance. To best complement the breast  procedures for a more satisfying result, an abdominoplasty along with a liposuction may also be recommended.

You may be a breast lift candidate if you:

  • Have gone through pregnancy and nursing and don't plan on having more children
  • Have stretched skin resulting to decrease in breast tissue volume
  • Have episodes of weight loss and weight gain as this may cause the breasts to droop
  • Have excess breast skin envelope and less breast tissue volume
  • Have poor skin elasticity causing the breasts to hang loosely

Upon consultation, the surgeon will conduct a thorough examination and complete assessment of your medical history and breast condition. Breast lift is ideal when there is no existing breast deformity or disease. The procedure does not interfere in breast feeding in future pregnancies.

The procedure requires a mammogram 6 months prior to surgery. The surgeon will then take photos of your breast and compare it to photos of reference provided by the surgeon to help decide in the expected appearance and quality of the breast. The surgery uses a general anesthesia in an outpatient facility. It takes 2-3 hours to finish the procedure. Incisions are made in inconspicuous and not readily noticeable areas of the chest area.

The incision is commonly made along the natural skin fold of the breast. Excess skin is then removed and the nipple is repositioned on the breast mound. To reshape the breast, the skin surrounding the areola and lower breast are brought together.

Layers of sutures are hidden and the final incisions are covered with the use of a surgical tape. Small suction drains are often placed to prevent accumulation of fluids. 2-5 days after surgery, the drains will be removed. The stitches will be removed 1-2 weeks after, and then a special suturing technique will be done to make sure the incisions fade.

You will have a soft bra or wrapping placed 1-2 days after surgery to support the breast and promote healing. The breasts are expected to bruise and be swollen with some discomfort for 48 hours. Loss of normal sensation may be felt due to the swelling, but sensation will come back usually in 3-6 months time. Non-strenuous activities may be resumed in less than a week.  Strenuous activities should be avoided for 3-4 weeks.

Complications for Mastopexy are uncommon. Potential risks are bleeding, infection and anesthesia reactions. A succeeding procedure may be performed in cases when wounds have healed poorly. Complications will be lessened by closely adhering to surgeon’s preoperative and postoperative instructions.

Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Consider a Brow Lift Surgery Today
January 6th, 2011  Posted By George Pope MD   Posted in Brow Lift | No Comments »

Our emotions are best seen on our faces. Depending on what we feel, our facial expressions change. The part of the face that manifests this the most is our forehead. A lot of factors influence the condition of the skin our forehead, these are: aging, gravity and stress. There is the tendency for the eyebrows to sag causing a hooding of the upper eyelids and further resulting to a tired appearance.

Brow Lift is the procedure that fixes this problem in order to regain and maintain that youthful appearance. Brow Lift reshapes and elevates the eyebrow thereby improving the eye. For better results, a brow lift may be combined with an eyelid lift.

You may wish to consider a brow lift in the following situations:

  • A tired appearance caused by the sagging and hooding of the forehead
  • Presence of deep horizontal crease along the forehead
  • The eyebrows and the top of the nose have deep frown lines
  • Obstruction of peripheral vision because of the excess skin on the upper eyelids

Upon consultation the surgeon will first conduct a thorough examination of your facial skin condition. Your medical history will be taken to determine the factors that might affect the outcome of the surgery. The surgeon will discuss concerning goals of the treatment and what the client would want to look like afterwards.

The procedure is done using light anaesthetic with deep sedation. It is performed in an outpatient facility. The classic method of brow lift hides the incision in the natural skin folds like the scalp hairline. This method reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Excess skin is removed and the eyebrows are elevated.

The endoscopic lift method involves incisions placed behind the hairline. A surgical telescope probe called and endoscope is used to help in performing this procedure. The wrinkling and the frown lines are addressed and improved, while the excess skin is removed to reveal a smoother and you-looking forehead. Another device will be inserted through a different incision to assist in making alterations. Titanium anchors are used to secure the altered tissue. This procedure is less invasive and minimal scarring is experienced.

Bruising and swelling are expected post surgery. The surgeon will prescribe antibiotics to reduce infection risks. Clients are normally allowed to wash their hair 1-2 days after.. The sutures and staples will be removed 7-10 days from the day of surgery.
Results of the procedure are expected to last for several more years. Clients who have undergone the procedure feel more rejuvenated and renewed. The facial enhancement greatly boosts self-esteem creating a more assertive and more confident individual.

Complications from the surgery are uncommon but possible risks include bleeding, infection and anesthesia reactions. Other risks include pain, numbness, itchiness, and poor healing, but they are easily treatable and are not serious.

Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) through Cosmetic Surgery
January 4th, 2011  Posted By George Pope MD   Posted in Gynecomastia | 1 Comment »

Many men also face large breast problems due to factors such as: obesity, heredity, liver disease, hormonal metabolism, drug side effects and other medical problems. The condition is called Gynecomastia or male breast enlargement.  For these individuals, Male Breast Reduction is highly recommended. This procedure helps in achieving a chest that is well contoured, flat and firm.

Upon consultation, Dr. Pope will perform a thorough assessment and take the client’s medical history. The cause of enlargement, skin elasticity and skin quality will be evaluated to determine the appropriate techniques that will be used during the surgery. The procedure will be explained to the client and photographs of similar clients having undergone the procedure will be presented. If fatty tissue is the cause of Gynecomastia, then a liposuction may also be recommended to remove excess and unwanted fat from the area. Areas to be suctioned may vary depending on the client’s desired figure after the procedure.

The operation is done under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. It takes about one to three hours to perform the entire procedure depending on the extent of correction. Traditional surgical incision is used when the cause of breast enlargement is not the excess fat deposit but rather the result of glandular disorder.

The excision of the glandular mass, skin and fat may be done alone or together with liposuction. Incisions are made at the edge of the areola or at the underarm to hide the scar. If significant amounts of tissue need to be removed, then larger incisions may be made.

Post surgery, bed rest is recommended. Surgical dressings are required for a couple of weeks and analgesics and antibiotics may be prescribed by the surgeon to reduce pain and prevent infection. Swelling, bruising and tenderness may also be experienced but that subsides in a few days. The sutures are cleared in about two weeks and normal activities may be resumed a week after the surgery.

Individuals who have undergone the procedure report an increased satisfaction in their figure. They have boosted self-confidence. However, obese clients are not advised to undergo this surgery.  Male Breast Reduction is also not recommended for individuals who abuse alcohol or use drugs.

In the Florida area, the Orlando Plastic Surgery Center offers the expertise of the leading plastic surgeons in Gynecomastia and related cosmetic surgery procedures. Please visit Plastic Surgery For Men to find out more about Orlando Plastic Surgery Center and schedule your appointment today with Dr. Pope.
